Mead

Mead (pronounced /ˈmiːd/ or pronounced /miˈad/) is an alcoholic beverage, made from honey and water via fermentation with yeast. Its alcoholic content may range from that of a mild ale to that of a strong wine. It may be still, carbonated, or sparkling; it may be dry, semi-sweet, or sweet. Mead is often referred to as “honey wine.”

From Wikipedia.

“Mead” is also popular as a house  name in Maldives and is usually prefixed by an accompanying adjective or noun as in:

  • Ma. Rose Mead
  • G. Ocean Mead
  • H. Lunch Mead
  • G. Sweet Mead (indeed!)
  • Seenu Hithadhoo Flower Mead
  • Kulhudhufushi White Mead
  • H. Blue Mead

Could it be the remnants of merrier times bygone?

“Pour me shum mo mead, Muhammadhu kalhey old boyo! Hic!”

    hehe.

    Funny how most Maldivians wants not to believe Buddhism or Hinduism was once the religion practiced nationwide. But there’s the names of the weekdays with names of Buddhist gods.

    And now comes following Moonshine in their shelters. lol

  2. erdnom says:

    there r other meanings of mead…lookup..
    and to Mondre, i wud like to say the names might be buddist gods names but they have come from sanskrit, so in many south asian/indian languages they sound very similar…

  3. MNJ says:

    Since Buddhism does not acknowledge a supreme omnipotent God, or for that matter Gods. It is more likely the god were of Hindu/Vedic in origin.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mead_(crater) …however I don’t think its relevant….

    I think they pictured all flowers and sunshine (and honey) when they thought about mead…

    Evidence of how ignorant and stupid some of us are….

  5. yaamyn says:

    No. NO. NOO.

    a) As the comments prove, it’s NOT ‘mead’ that is the name of these houses. Mead does NOT mean what it actually means. Do you even know what ‘mead’ means in Arabic? As the holy prophet S.A.W spoke? First learn the truth. May Allah open your eyes. Or blind you.

    b) Besides, there are no such houses in the Maldives.. What proof do you have? Where is the evidence from Shariah and Hadhis? You’re talking nonsense. This is all a plot of munaafiqun to cause dissent and confusion in the heart of true believers. I plead with all my Muslim brothers and sisters to not fall for these false stories spread by disbelievers. True believers will not waver in the face of such baseless propaganda? Mead? Right. Next thing you’ll say all or women should run around naked and men should have gay sex after alcohol binging.. roflol. Dream on! The Maldives is 100% muslim and we’ll never let any other religion in our country! then lalalallaa…

    c) You’re wrong. It’s all a CIA conspiracy. But you wouldn’t see this, because EVERYONE knows you’re only a christian atheist trying to promote idol worship because of jewish influence. I feel pity for you, simon. May allah show you the light. Or smite you. Preferably both. :p

    THERE.

    I’ve spoken for all Haabees, saving them a lot of thinking and typing effort. (You’re welcome, brothers, God bless you all. And punish the infidels. Alhamdullillah! Mercilessly!)

  6. Mondre says:

    Wikipedia says the origin of Mead has been lost in prehistory.

    Reading between the words of the house names i see there’s a person who likes an ocean of Mead. There’s the person who likes Mead with lunch. Could it be such passion for Mead has come from where none other than the place of origin “Mold”ives

  7. [...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Ahmed Zahid, Hilath Rasheed. Hilath Rasheed said: Mead and the Maldivian identity crisis http://bit.ly/95K0Qp [...]

  8. bandey says:

    its true, my mothers place is also called mead. and when i told them so they refused to believe it. lol

  9. bandey says:

    however…
    MEED
    n.
    1. A fitting recompense; reward
    2. Archaic A merited gift or wage

    hence…
    * Ma. Rose MEED
    * G. Ocean MEED
    * G. Sweet MEED
    * Seenu Hithadhoo Flower MEED
    etc…

    so if they did not misspell “meed” with “mead” the whole thing would make sense since “MEED” means “REWARD”.
    I do remember some of the houses being spelled “MEED” before. They later changed it to “MEAD” for unknown reasons.

    Perhaps Microsoft Word “Spell Checker” was at fault?

    Flower Mead as a house name is popular not only in Maldives, in fact our colonial masters are also fond of having that address.. and most “English” dictionaries acknowledge that mead is like an alternative noun for meadow.

    • Simon says:

      Hi,
      I have not seen any definition of the word that implied it is an alternative to meadow. Exactly which “English” dictionaries are you talking about?

  12. COLABEYYA says:

    mead2
    n
    (Earth Sciences / Physical Geography) an archaic or poetic word for meadow
    [Old English m_d]
