The Lex Luthors
Someone pointed out in one of the comments on this blog that Maldivians were the brainiest people in Asia. There is a lot of truth to this claim. After all we've got students achieving top honors in colleges and universities abroad. So relatively speaking, we may appear to be smarter.
But it is a strange kind of smartness that we have. A sort of Lex Luthor type of evil-genius more than the do-good Batman wit. We're more selfish than altruistic. But Lex Luthor actually uses the graymatter in his brain. The problem with us is that we rarely use the 3 pounds between our ears. So in that way we are a bunch of pretty useless Lex Luthors.
Anyway, that thought aside, I've been thinking about a future in which we may have a president who is not Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. For someone like me who has no recollection of any other president it would sound strange to hear on the radio, say, "Dhivehi Raajeyge Raeesul Jumhooriyyaa Al-Ustaz Reeko Moosa Manik". If it sounds completely ridiculous and foreign to you then you too are a victim of decades of having the same old Lex Luthor in top office.

If we are as good as the evil genius of Luthor, then we have become a scheming lot, averse to common good and out to destroy ourselves.

Simon,
Is Al-Ustaz a part of our president's title.
It is true, with Alex Luthors, supermen will follow. Without Devil, religions will have no role to play. Without oppression, oppositon will vanish. Likewise, without MDP, the rest of the PP's will not survive.

There's an evolutionary theory of the brain that explains the development of the brain in three phases of evolution. The R-complex, the limbic system and the neo-cortex. The neo-cortex is the most recent and manifests in mammals. In the case of Maldivians, it's the reptilian complex (R-complex) that 24/7 overrides the more evolved rational functions. Some of us in Maldives may have PhD's but our thinking is reptilian like the Mutants serving Mum-Ra the ever-living source of all Evil in Thundercats.
What we need to do is trying to get in line with evolution and at least try to develop intelligence
"It is responsible for rage[1], xenophobia[1], basic survival fight-or-flight responses[1], territoriality[citation needed] and social hierarchy[citation needed], along with the desire to submit to stronger (Alpha Type) members of one's own species[citation needed]. Often, the R-Complex can override the more rational function of the brain and result in unpredictable, primitive behavior in even the most sentient of creatures, humans included."

Yeah,
although we are smart, i guess we are very much lacking when it comes to self-confidence & uncertainty. I also feel it is a system designed to be so. hehehe Donno wat you guys have on mind...
