I am surprised that you are demanding "a crackdown on extremists." Are you supporting the types of crackdowns that the government had carried out in the past? What we need is not a crackdown on extremists but identifying the root causes of extremism and addressing those issues. A person who is suspected of committing a crime could be detained and his/her actions investigated. If there is evidence of guilt the person must be tried in a court, and subjected to a fair trial. It is up to the judiciary to decide the punishment.

I am not joining this online protest because I cannot agree with all things that you are calling for. But I condemn the act of terrorism and hope that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

In that way a continuous day to day action and update on the issue at hand can be tackled by the Mvbloggers. I think you are the man with a technical background to initiate something like this.

i am in with a reservation subtext on "a crack down" ... i share the sentiments of kakuni ... we need to make our nation belong to all of us and not some ... yet we have to train the minds of everyone toward peaceful existinence ... Islam is not the cause of terrorism ... it is the selfish teachings of sects that need to be challenged to create awareness amongst our young people ... All sects do not preach the true teachings of Islam ...

This call isn't for a crackdown on extremism, or islam. It is a call for online bloggers to join in saying No to terrorism. Just a way for onliners to express their view and opposition to terrorist attacks.

The call was simple and direct, it didn't mention extremism, or Islam.

A bit too cheesy for a title, don’t you think? I agree with ismailras who highlighted the importance of identifying the 'root causes'. The title and body of the post prescribed by Simon is barebones. My suggestion is that we append our own experiences and opinions to the campaign posts to accumulate perspective and encourage debate on the issue.

My first reaction to this whole terrorism business in the Maldives is flimsy at best. We are too hypocritical to actually make the sort of value judgment that this campaign signifies. If you observe carefully, you will notice how the majority of the Maldivian population close to 70% or more residing in the islands would hear about the ‘Jihad’ against the infidels and how we should raise arms against the infidels who are attempting to corrupt us more often than not. We foster terrorism in our backyards through retroactive schools of Islamic thought. This can openly propel terrorism and draw terrorists into Maldives if the matter is left unnoticed.

I think this is the reality common to the majority than it is to the well-read, western-educated and privileged few in the Maldives. The point being- a sound-bite is inherently incapable of stimulating thought and appeal to the minds of the masses. Also noteworthy of mentioning is the validity of concerning ourselves with the grievances of terrorists themselves. Should we be quick to label any one who does that as an apologetic? Or even perhaps a terrorist?

As Maldivians I don't think we should call this as terrorism. This is jihad.

If you were to ask these people who are committing terror in the name of Islam, they will tell you that it is Jihad.
