This Doomed Nation
I'll tell you something. This nation is doomed. And it will always be doomed regardless of whether we are ruled by a dictator or a telly tubby. This nation is doomed not because we don't have such a thing as rights. No. It is doomed because we have no concept of such a thing as rights. It is doomed not because we don't have freedom. No. It is doomed because we lack the mental capacity to comprehend freedom. You don't. I don't. No one does.
Our nation is beautiful and our people are scattered far and wide throughout. It creates an idyllic illusion and yet this is our biggest weakness. A devious and calculating dictator knows that the biggest mistake he could do is amass this scattered lot into bigger islands – let group ethics prosper, let thinking and open mindedness be cultivated. This thing called decentralization is a myth. Such a dictator knows that to keep the population in a constant state of dumbness, if possible, he would go so far as to have one person per island.
These islands, scattered far and wide are inhabit not by people but by imbeciles and ignorant fools such as you and me who cannot think for themselves. Just the way a dictator wants them to be.
This is why our nation of idiots have housed this very same dictator in a 40 million dollar palace and our tsunami victims still live in tin-boxes out in the sun drenched Hulhumale’. Why? Simply because we don’t know that it is wrong. That’s why.
This is the same imbecile and the ignorant fool in you that will ask me “so you’re saying everyone should live in a 40 million dollar palace?”.
This is why our nation of idiots begs for scraps of medical assistance while this same dictator and his lackeys can travel to Singapore on a whim or a simple headache. (“So you’re saying everyone should be flown to Singapore for medical?”, comes to mind doesn’t it?).
This is why our nation of idiots thinks that being able to read and write Dhivehi makes us 100% literate while I doubt anyone can produce a translated book on politics, philosophy or world history written in Dhivehi. Why? Because now that we’re 100% literate there is no need to think beyond our 10th grade Dhivehi and Islam books, beyond our Aliflaala stories and beyond our Boduthakurufaanu legends. Where is the Dhivehi translation of the Holy Quran when for decades we’ve had Daniel Steele translated? (You will no doubt be thinking, “So you think the Holy Quran is as easy to translate as Danielle Steele?”. Get a brain.)
The surfacing of Dhivehi translation of parts of the Bible and Christian propaganda scared the living shits out of us because we're nothing but imbeciles. And to make matters worse we've got fish blood running through our veins, no?
This is the same nation of idiots that think that government providing us a safe island harbor ("..at the cost of millions of dollars" - to scare our narrow Rf 1 minds), providing us with the bare 'basic' necessities as drinking water and electricity is doing that out of overwhelming generosity and not because it is our constitutional right.
This is the same nation of idiots that cannot comprehend anyone else for dictator or president (whatever you call it). It is the imbecile in you that makes you ask such terribly idiotic questions as “but who else is qualified enough to lead this country?” as if this is the most complicated, most populous country on earth. Our narrow minds cannot comprehend a person who isn’t short, spectacled and old and touting religious rhetoric to lead us.
But do you know why this nation is doomed beyond any reasonable doubt? It is doomed because regardless of whether we are educated, smart or not we are two-sided, spineless pigs with a thickened fog for brains and our moral ethics and convictions are as shallow as the puddles on the roads we walk. It is doomed because our soul is for sale for hard cash and luxuries and we strongly believe that no one is responsible for anything except God. We invoke God when and where we fit necessary. "Allah dhenevodigen vaanee!".
We are doomed because just like in telly tubby land, in our minds, we live a rosy, sunshine-filled life lying in out tiny stinking beds in our tiny stinking room with a blank space where our tiny brains should be. And it’s simply alright with us.

Bravo Simon.
Now that I have read the entire post, I will wait for Asr, for my special prayer to Allah that the people of this nation take a moment off Gaumee TV and take a glimpse of this valuable text.
I will also pray that dictator will be kind enough to keep the internet service intact just for a few more days.
I hear there are plans to... Oh, because some Maldivians are now tuning into Simon Shareef instead of oriyaan.tk

we the simple minded have for decades known our capability to be far greater than the 1RF mind we have, yet we choose to live such an arrogant life.
I will boldly say that we all have been 'hitting the nail on the head' spot on yet at the same time refusing to believe we did so.
we all should be ashamed!

Nice one. We should think more before we act fast. Thinking twice is better

ah!..finally...i agree with you.you have done these 'confessions'...but the next big thing is to 'repent' and move on...i think we can change it...yes...humans have the capability to develop themselves....hopeless it seems, but still we can do what ever we can.As for removing the dictator,or weakening his powers..its important..because that is what made the maldivians see what ever you have written here.
im very sure gayom have read 1984 (some arabic translation from egypt?)...dictators can control our life...but we can control everything (including ourselves and the dictator) if we are good enough...the thing is...we need enlightenment for this nation.

Simon, the article is sensational. Its just about there, it loses its appeal. Most post-modern societies in the world too are in pretty much the dire situation we find ourselves in.
Their democratically elected leaders are anything but. Policy is driven for the benefit of benefactors and profiteers.
As is in the Maldives. What really makes the mark of doom on our fate is that when people like you, me, the other guy loses hope and adopts apathy and hopelessness.
God, to say the least is dead. And so is Neitchze, the dude who said that. There's no point in arguing about the validity of His (or Her?) existence- nor using his state of statelessness and omnipotence everytime we need to justify our irresponsibility.
The awakening we need is not that of religious, political or socio-economic. It needs to formulate itself at the very heart of society- resolving of norms through rational vessels.
That is, something we almost always take for granted and leave the technocrats to figure out. All the more room for them to swindle and bludgeon us out of what is rightfully ours.
Citing moral convictions and ethics as the root of the problems could be a bit short-sighted. Since our conception of such idealistic life-world systems are hardly a solution to 'awaken' the individual.
Apart from that, I'd readily agree with everything else in your post.

Ignorance is bliss. Only those who have achieved as awareness are the people who are suffering from the knowledge of the sate our country is in.
Just be born. Be indifferent. And then die. We'll be so much happier.
A lot of Maldivians believe that if they don't get involved with politics, then the politics won't come and bite their fluffy lil tushies. They don't know that policies are made through politics. The very rules/laws that will govern over their rights and their futures.

All this writing, all these ideas, i do hope would one day lead to something good. Maybe develop the 1rf minds of Maldivians into atleast one dollar minds.
I too feel that many Maldivians actually fail to realize what they should, can and must have. Many fail to realize what is actually goin on, and these people are then puppeted around by the so called political leaders to create turmoil within the society. Unless and until each and every citizen of this nation realizes where he is standing, and where he should be, nothing good is going to come out of all the protests and gatherings.
Action along with awareness and understanding would create better results, thus a better Maldives ( i hope :) )

Yamani, for the record let me make it very clear that I have never been a leader of anything let alone a great leader.
Ciman, I hope that my writing, even though most of the time I myself cringe reading, will strike a chord with readers exactly because these are the things that we find difficult to talk about in the first place.
I've read all comments to this post and I appreciate each and everyone of them. Big, huge, gigantic thank you for everyone.
Let's light up the darkness we live in.
