Random Reflexions

Several years ago I had an argument with someone regarding brothels operating in Male. His argument was that there should NOT be any brothels simply because "we are a 100% muslim nation" and that "Islamic law" prohibits it. I countered saying that although there "should NOT" be brothels their existence proves that our conformity to (Islamic?) law was diminishing.

Nine years on, my point of view has changed little. But it has been somewhat refined. Today, I believe more in personal ethics rather than strict conformity to law. This is because, in my opinion, regardless of any law, doing what is right and having a righteous conscience is far more important and rewarding than conforming to any laws. Laws are, by their very nature, a system used to coerce and they exist to coerce society into a predefined mold. It is well and good.

Where personal ethics fail there is the law. Where law fails there is always belief in God.

But, seriously, how often do we actually think about law and God when commiting a wrongful act? Are we more scared that our wives / girlfriends may find out when we betray them? Are we more terrified of the police when we engage in, say, substance abuse? Or should we really be terrified of God and the day of judgement? After all, what could possibly be worse than an eternity in hell?

In my opinion, most of us are terrified of everyone else other than God. So without a strong belief in God how do we conform to Islamic law?

Sure, they do apply. But only to law breakers? Law makers / upholders are fast losing credibility because of their own lawlessness.

So, does being 100% muslim mean obedience to rules and regulations? Not necessarily. Most of us don't even know half the rules or even the laws of this country. I don't, that's for sure. But I have never been caught breaking a law. That doesn't mean I have broken a few in the process.

Ok so we are muslims, the lot of us. "100% muslim" we proudly claim. What we really mean, when we say that, is that everybody is "outwardly" conforming to law meanwhile everyone is secretly and constantly breaking them almost daily.

when we clearly know that not all of us adhere to the law. But to prove my point may I suggest that we also add one more line, just to add that extra "Oomph!", to that claim?

"100%Muslim, 100% Heterosexual"

Right!
